Safety at National Grid

National Grid’s vision is to be a world-class safety organization, with zero injuries every day. A critical component of achieving this vision is the careful development, implementation, and maintenance of safety procedures.  National Grid seeks to maintain a consistent approach to managing safety and health hazards as well as clearly articulating the company’s core safety vision and guiding principles.

Guiding Principles

a. Safety is paramount.
b. All unsafe acts, work related injuries and illnesses are preventable.
c. We should safeguard the public in everything we do.

Every employee will:

  • Take personal responsibility for his or her safety on and off the job.
  • Help ensure the safety of co-workers, contractors, and the general public.
  • Observe and respond to all activities and hazards to reduce incidents and injuries.
  • Help create a company culture that sustains our commitment to safety and health, and that fosters continuous improvement in safety performance.
  • Communicate openly about safety performance, concerns and incidents as the critical pathway to avoiding future incidents and injuries.
  • Work together to make our workplace safer.
  • Embrace compliance with safety and health rules and regulations as the minimum acceptable standard, not the target.
  • Accept that safe performance on the job is a condition of employment.

In addition, management will:

  • Lead and enable people to work safely.
  • Support safety through our policies, resource allocation and decision making.
  • Ensure that appropriate safety training is provided to all employees.
  • Build on the commitment of everyone to make continuous improvements necessary to achieve our vision.

National Grid’s use of ISNetworld

National Grid became a member of ISNetworld in May 2009. National Grid uses ISNetworld to evaluate health, safety and procurement information as a part of its contractor management process.  National Grid also manages its contractor on-boarding process through ISNetworld.

National Grid’s ISNetworld requirements include the Management Systems Questionnaire (MSQ), Operator Qualifications (OQ), Review and Verification Services (RAVS) for contractor’s safety programs, OSHA logs, EMR letters, Letters of Assurance and insurance certificates.  National Grid requires all high -risk contractors to subscribe to ISNetworld.

The transition from National Grid’s previous contractor management system to ISNetworld has been successful due to clear internal communication and strong upper management support.  A video message from National Grid’s vice president of Safety can be found on the ISNetworld website.
