Ontario Safety Blitz Focuses on Personal Protective Equipment

October inspections in Ontario, Canada will focus on personal protective equipment during an enforcement blitz at industrial and health care workplaces.

The purpose of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is to reduce or prevent a worker’s exposure to occupational health and safety hazards.  Potential hazards can include blows to the body, loud noises, heat, chemicals, and electrical hazards.  According to Ontario’s Ministry of Labour, PPE acts as a barrier to these hazards and includes all types of protective clothing including helmets, shoes, goggles, respirators and other safety gear.

Ontario’s safety blitz will focus on head, eye, and foot protection.  However, inspectors may also address other types of protection, such as fall, respiratory, skin and hearing PPE.

Inspectors of some priority areas will focus on PPE that protects the eye, head and foot, and will also address any other hazards that may be found.  They will focus on safety gear used by workers in the following industries: wood and metal fabrication, vehicle sales and service, food and beverage, wholesalers, and education.

In health care workplaces, the blitz will check for safety gear being used or worn by non-clinical staff in the dietary services, housekeeping/environmental services, and maintenance shops departments.

Inspectors will be checking for whether or not the requirements related to the use and care of PPE are being met, as specified in the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Act.

All employers, supervisors, and workers have both duties and responsibilities under this act regarding PPE.  This blitz is ensuring that all requirements are being met and that workers and employers alike are maintaining all PPE in proper condition.

22nd Secretary of Defense, Dr. Robert Gates, to Speak at ISN Annual Users Conference

Dr. Robert Gates, the 22nd Secretary of Defense, will speak at the 2011 ISN Annual Users Conference this November 3rd at the Gaylord Texan Hotel.

Dr. Robert M. Gates served as the 22nd Secretary of Defense (2006-2011) and is the only Secretary of Defense in U.S. history to be asked to remain in that office by a newly-elected President. President Barack Obama is the eighth president Dr. Gates has served. He previously served under President George W. Bush.

Before becoming Secretary of Defense in 2006, Dr. Gates was the President of Texas A&M University, the nation’s seventh largest university. Prior to assuming the Texas A&M presidency, on August 1, 2002, he served as Interim Dean of the George Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M from 1999 to 2001.

Secretary Gates joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1966 and spent nearly 27 years as intelligence professional. During that period, he spent nearly nine years at the National Security Council, The White House, serving four presidents of both political parties.

Dr. Gates served as Director of Central Intelligence from 1991 until 1993. He is the only career officer in CIA’s history to rise from entry-level employee to Director. He served as Deputy Director of Central Intelligence from 1986 until 1989 and as Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Adviser at the White House from January 20, 1989, until November 6, 1991, for President George H.W. Bush.

Secretary Gates has been awarded the National Security Medal, the Presidential Citizens Medal, has twice received the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal, and has three times received CIA’s highest award, the Distinguished Intelligence Medal.

Benefits of Building a Safety Culture

We know safety pays in the construction field. While safer companies traditionally enjoy lower insurance premiums based on a lower Experience Modification Rate (EMR), there are additional, less apparent benefits of building a workplace safety culture.

The building of a safe, caring culture, with an added focus on employee training, promotes employee responsibility. Safe contractors have fewer negative experiences with OSHA and other regulatory agencies. And while a reduction in lost time cases translates to more time working and more money made, a culture that encourages employee safety, responsibility and training is also proven to promote better morale and productivity.

Even more, management companies and owners often look to the safest contractors, those with low EMR and incident rates, to work onsite for projects, which makes safe companies more attractive bidders. Similarly, a clean safety record, resulting from a robust safety culture, makes a company more marketable in a competitive work environment.

Business owners can analyze the ‘Bottom Line’ from many different perspectives: cost savings, employee satisfaction or overall productivity. However, any way you look at it – a dedicated safety culture can be a positive influence on the company’s pocketbook and employee morale.
